Who We Are

Welcome to Happy Paws Spay-Neuter Animal Hospital

Dr Ellie St John graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 2004. She emigrated to the United States shortly afterwards, spending the rest of the noughties in a small animal hospital where her boss wore cowboy boots to work every day while he treated tigers, lions, snakes and parrots, amongst other species. Dr Ellie, taking a slightly different path, discovered her love of spay and neuter surgery after volunteering with a charity called Heaven Can Wait, which sterilised feral cats one Sunday a month.

After returning to the U.K. in 2013, Dr Ellie completed a Post Graduate Diploma in the field of public health, at the Royal Vet College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her special interests were Ebola virus and antimicrobial resistance.

In 2014, Dr Ellie spent time working at an emergency hospital in Las Vegas, as well as spaying and neutering dogs and cats at the city’s municipal shelter, where her record was 44 surgeries in a day. In 2016 she made her final move back to England and has been in Sussex since, working for various companion anima practices.

After seeing the impact of the cost-of-living crisis, along with waiting lists for routine surgery and the combination of increased pet ownership with the continued shortage of vets in the profession, she saw the need for a low cost, high quality spay/neuter operation in the area. She is passionate about the welfare of pets undergoing surgery, and has a particular interest in pain control. It is her belief that newer methods of treatment can better  serve pets, their owners and vets - both our clinic and the surrounding ones.
